Choose the right register

CVR means Det Centrale Virksomhedsregister, the Central Business Register. It is operated by Erhvervsstyrelsen, the Danish Business Authority. CVR.dk and its datacvr.virk.dk interface combine basic records with other statutory company information. Coverage includes registered associations, public bodies and information on Greenlandic businesses. [1]

Information available

CVR contains current and historical records. Basic information covers identifiers, names, addresses and the start or cessation of an entity. Depending on the record, it includes industry, contacts, employees and registered persons. Danish personal identification numbers, CPR numbers, are not disclosed to private users. [1]

Why not every entity has annual accounts

The interface brings together information from several statutory registers, so coverage differs by legal form. The authority expressly states that personally owned businesses do not file annual reports or register objectives and representation rules in the same way. [1]

Access from abroad

The authority confirms that ordinary company data remains accessible to all users without sign-in. For beneficial ownership it supports Danish MitID and electronic identification under eIDAS. [2]

Who can view beneficial owners

Eligible users include competent authorities, anti-money-laundering obliged entities and people or businesses with a legitimate interest. The guidance gives journalism, specified civil-society activities and intended transactions as examples of possible categories. The actual purpose must satisfy the relevant conditions. [2]

Users declare their category and confirm the information. The guidance describes a three-year access authorisation, with sign-in required on each use. Machine access requires a separate agreement. Ordinary API access no longer includes beneficial-owner information after September 2025. [2]

Free electronic access and manual orders

The current CVR price page confirms free services without manual handling. Its still-published tariff is marked effective from 5 December 2014. It lists DKK 300 for a registration certificate, DKK 500 for a name-change certificate and DKK 300 for old microfilm or remote-archive accounts. The page states that manually handled products are VAT-exempt. [5]

Order lead times and physical confirmation

Standard orders are normally processed within ten working days, plus postal transit where applicable. Express orders placed before 13:00 on working days are normally processed the same day; later orders normally by 12:00 the next working day. Express adds DKK 450 per order. Physical remote-archive retrieval is excluded. [5]

Copy authentication and its language scope

For copies not already authenticated, such as articles or incorporation documents, authentication can be requested after ordering through the official contact form using the order number. The help offers Danish or English for that authentication. This does not mean the whole document is translated. [5]

Avoid common mistakes

  • Access controls introduced in September 2025 apply to the “Reelle ejere” section. [2]
  • CVR records can carry a “reklamebeskyttelse” flag. Private users may not use protected basic data for direct marketing. [1]

Frequently asked questions

Do I need MitID for a normal company search?

No. The authority confirms access to general company information without sign-in. MitID or European eID becomes relevant for the separate beneficial-owner access route. [2]

Are Danish accounts free?

The official EU profile states that electronic accounts without manual handling are free. Archive retrieval and specially authenticated documents are separate services. [3]

How do I distinguish a business from its workplace?

Compare the CVR and P numbers. The CVR number identifies the registered entity; the P number belongs to a production unit or workplace. [1]
