The Gambia: request company information from the Companies Department

The Ministry of Justice’s Companies Department holds company records. Address requests for current register information to that department. The publicly available PDF company list is a dated publication concerning annual returns. It replaces neither a complete company search nor a current extract.

Request registry information from the ministry

The ministry website explains responsibility for the company register and the company formation process. Contact the registry for information about a particular business. Provide the full company name and registration number where possible. [1] [2]

How to read the published company list

The four-page “List of Companies” PDF contains 128 numbered entries. Page 4 provides instructions for filing outstanding annual returns and the issue date, 23 December 2025. This is not a complete list of companies currently registered. [3]

Distinguish the required documents

The department issues business and incorporation certificates upon registration. Its guidance also identifies the memorandum and articles of association as formation documents to be submitted. Ask for the particular filed copy and current information separately. An earlier incorporation certificate does not answer questions about later changes. [1]

Published formation charges are not information fees

The department’s fee tables concern name reservation and registration. Its statement about completing procedures within a day also relates to formation. Neither establishes the cost or delivery time for researching an existing company. [1] [4]

Overseas research differs from foreign-company registration

A foreign company needs an agent permanently resident in The Gambia to register its branch. For information about another company, check the requirements separately with the Companies Department. [4]

Contacts and local offices

The notice names the Companies Department at the Ministry of Justice headquarters in Banjul and the branch at Kanifing Municipal Council. The ministry address is Marina Parade, Banjul. The PDF lists general telephone numbers +220 4228450 and +220 4228665. [3] [1]

Avoid common mistakes

  • Application forms and identity documents required from founders do not automatically apply to external information requests. Describe your research purpose expressly. [1]
